The Charleston Battery will play South Georgia Tormenta FC in a mid-season friendly match at Savannah’s Optimist Field on May 10th, the two clubs announced Wednesday during a joint press conference. The match between the two affiliate clubs is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., with a clinic for a limited number of kids set to run from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
“The match against Tormenta is exciting for us” Charleston Battery CEO Mike Kelleher said. “Savannah has a great soccer following that deserves the opportunity to see the game played at the highest level in person.”
The Charleston Battery are celebrating their 25th year of professional soccer this year as a member of the United Soccer League (USL). Based in Statesboro, Tormenta played its first regular season last year as a member of the Premier Development League (PDL).
The game will have a local feel to it as Savannah Country Day grad Nico Rittmeyer is expected to see a “good bit of playing time” in the May match. Rittmeyer was a standout soccer player for the Hornets from 2009-2012 until moving on to play at The College of Charleston.
“Nico has just signed on as a rookie for us at Charleston, but he’s a former player for Tormenta FC, and he’s a native of Savannah. So he couldn’t be more excited as we couldn’t be more excited,” Kelleher said.
Rittmeyer is the first Tormenta FC alum to sign a professional contract.
Optimist Field, which sits in the Northeast end of Savannah’s Daffin Park, will hold approximately 2,000 people for the event thanks to the addition of portable bleachers. There is room for 1,200 seating tickets and 800 more standing room only tickets.
Standing room tickets are on sale for $10, regular admission tickets are going for $15, while passes for the clinic and game are $55 in price. Tickets are available by calling 843-971-4625 or at charlestonbattery.com,
