This year, the Hispanic Heritage Club of Hinesville celebrated its 25th anniversary. Organized in 1992 by a group of retired and active-duty military personnel, the Heritage Club and its folkloric dance troupe have become mainstays at Hispanic events and festivals throughout the Coastal Empire and Carolina Low Country.
First Sergeant (Retired) Pablo Rodriguez, is a native of Puerto Rico and has been a part of the organization since its founding. Over the past two months, his club has collected 22 pallets loaded with emergency food, water, diapers, clothing, and other hygiene products to benefit victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
“I want to thank all those who donated supplies as well as the Georgia MATES (National Guard) from Fort Stewart,” Rodriguez said. “They brought a tractor trailer and fork lift to pick up the supplies and deliver them to Savannah where they were airfreighted to Puerto Rico by the Savannah Air Guard. We especially want to thank the following soldiers for their support: MSG Steven Dowling, SFC Jeffrey Ponder, SFC John Wilkerson, SPC Kerri Thornton , SPC James Cartwright , and SPC Carrie Beverage.”
