The Mediation Center of the Coastal Empire, established in 1986, is a nonprofit organization that provides education, training and programs dedicated to helping citizens resolve disputes through resolution as an alternative to litigation and the hiring of an attorney.
Their Family Law Resource Center serves Pro Se citizens (those acting without the assistance of an attorney) by offering forms, guidance and education to file for divorce, legitimation, adult name change, modification, contempt, and answers to questions. The center's team is available to assist residents in Chatham and surrounding counties, including Bryan, Effingham, Liberty, Tattnall and Bulloch.
To better serve the local Spanish-speaking community, the mediation center is training bilingual volunteers like Alicia Perez to assist the mediation staff as language interpreters.
Perez and her family moved to the U.S. from El Salvador when Alicia was just 7-years-old. A talented artist and musician, she earned her Master's degree in Fine Art from Georgia Southern University and currently teaches painting and art appreciation at the university's Savannah campus (formerly Armstrong State University).
“I volunteer at the mediation center because I appreciate the work they do in our community and I want to make sure Spanish-speaking residents have access to their services,” Perez said. “I've been interpreting ever since I was 10-years-old. Immigrant families depend on their children when they first come here because their children learn English in school. But it's more than just the words. I also understand our culture and I know how to convey expressions and emotions that may seem difficult when taken literally.”
You do not have to be referred by a court or an attorney to use the Mediation Center's services and they offer positive, affordable, and time efficient conflict resolution of even the most complex disputes. They provide a comfortable, confidential environment in their Savannah offices and are staffed by experienced mediators with a wide range of professional backgrounds.
Over the last twenty years, the Mediation Center has trained over 180 volunteer mediators, conducted over 8,000 mediations and facilitated nearly five thousand settlements. The Center is located in Savannah's mid-town area at 5105 Paulsen Street, Suite 125D.
